The Challenge

Apps.com, acquired by Intuit in 2000, had become outdated by 2017. The platform suffered from an obsolete tech stack, lack of mobile responsiveness causing Google SEO penalties, poor search functionality, and a confusing user experience resulting in high bounce rates.

The Approach

User research interviews across three customer personas โ€” small business owners, accountants, and developers. Established three core experience principles: surface relevant apps using customer data, optimize for mobile ad-hoc browsing, differentiate search versus browse. Pair-design methodology with simultaneous wireframing, high-fidelity mockups, and code prototyping. Mobile-first responsive HTML/SCSS prototype developed in parallel with visual designs. Iterative UserTesting.com validation at each stage.

  • Fully responsive marketplace redesign launched on new platform
  • Maintained SEO prominence while improving mobile experience
  • Increased app discovery and connection rates
  • Created production-ready SCSS/HTML scaffolding adopted company-wide as Intuit Responsive Grid
  • Established showcase example of QuickBooks design excellence

The Impact

Successfully launched on new platform meeting all performance expectations. Created transferable code package benefiting entire organization. The responsive grid system became a company-wide standard.
